David Banner knows about struggle. Since his last album, 2005’s Certified, the rapper/activist had to deal with the traumatic effects of Hurricane Katrina on his native Mississippi, attacks on Hip-Hop from the federal government, and his father’s death from cancer in 2007. Despite these hardships and thoughts of retirement, Banner has persevered. He was one of the few artists to testify before Congress last year defending Hip-Hop lyrics, and did so again recently on BET’s Hip-Hop vs. America.

Now with a new album, The Greatest Story Ever Told, scheduled for release on July 15, David Banner explains the apathy and hypocrisy of our culture, and why his will remains unbroken.

AllHipHop.com: How have you approached this record differently, if you have, from your last albums?

David Banner: It’s strange because initially my approach was just (making) hit records. Being that I produce myself I was trying to put as many back to back hits as I could. I know that nobody that’s on the level that I am is as close to the streets as I was when stuff got bad for me. So I was able to come back to the street and listen to what kids wanted and give it back to them.

Katrina had hit and the support still wasn’t there for music with political content. I thought this was what the world wanted from us? But then I realized they were a bunch of hypocrites so I just said f**k it I’m gonna focus on just hit records.

But then here comes George Bush and all of his antics and then this high ass gas. People on the streets I know never cared about politics start coming up to me saying ‘yo Banner we now understand what you talking about. We know you gonna bring it on this album. We can’t wait!’ And I ain’t have no politics on the album (laughs). It was straight stuntin’.

AllHipHop.com: So you felt you had to go back and modify it?

Banner: I trashed that whole album and made a new one called 13, which is like Outkast on crack. But then I realized the best David Banner is a synthesis of everything: the political, street, and experimentation.

The album is 22 tracks. And Universal is mad because I don’t have standard, mechanical tracks. But I was like f**k that we’re gonna give the people a quality album. If anybody says The Greatest Story Ever Told isn’t the greatest, there’s something they can do. They can close their eyes, pucker up, and allow me to push their face into rhinoceros balls…sweaty rhinoceros balls.

AllHipHop.com: Do you feel quality albums are missing in today’s market?

Banner: One of the reasons why music is so f**ked up is that people have been putting out so much trash lately. If people don’t buy into The Greatest Story Ever Told I don’t wanna hear these rules and regulations about how Hip-Hop is supposed to be and you want it to better. Naw, you just wanna continue to d**kride. This is the album people have been waiting for. If they don’t get it, I’ll go do a movie.

“The conversations me and RZA had were amazing, and I don’t think we could’ve had them say four years ago. I told him, 'Dude let me produce you. I know you’re a great producer but I got ideas that can work.' The problem with Hip-Hop is that everyone is Pro Tools or let me send you the track. That wasn’t the case with RZA, we were in the studio together and I think it will be a beneficial relationship for years to come.”

AllHipHop.com: You recently produced the RZA for his Digi Snacks (“Straight Up The Block”) album. Being that you’re a formidable producer in your own right, what did you guys pick up from each other?

Banner: It was a learning experience. With the lack of record sales everyone is coming back to their senses. It’s humbling for all of us. The conversations me and RZA had were amazing, and I don’t think we could’ve had them say four years ago. I told him, “Dude let me produce you. I know you’re a great producer but I got ideas that can work.” The problem with Hip-Hop is that everyone is Pro Tools or let me send you the track. That wasn’t the case with RZA, we were in the studio together and I think it will be a beneficial relationship for years to come.

AllHipHop.com: Katrina’s lingering devastation on Mississippi, New Orleans, and Alabama is out the public consciousness. Do you feel it’s due more to general apathy or the media just pushing it away.

Banner: I told everyone this would happen. We’re only concerned with what the media spoonfeeds us. We’re concerned about Sean Bell as long as it’s on CNN. We don’t seek anything on our own. The truth is we’re only emotional or speaking out if it’s on TV. So if they (the media) want it to stop they just turn it off. And then us (Hip-Hop media), we follow the big media outlets to keep our numbers up. And that’s some bulls**t.

AllHipHop.com: On the BET Hip-Hop vs. America men’s panel, you stated that there was a lot of ego-stroking being done, and when the cameras stopped everyone would just go about their business. Did that happen or were there steps taken to initiate action after the show.

Banner: Everyone exchanges numbers but there’s no follow up, but I knew that was what was gonna happen. That’s why I said it. “Y’all ain’t gonna do s**t but talk.”

AllHipHop.com: Do you feel there have been any ramifications from you speaking before Congress last year about lyrics in Hip-Hop music, or that it was mostly posturing on Congress’ part?

Banner: If we wouldn’t have stepped up some s**t would’ve happened. We showed that there are intelligent Black people in rap that will protect our form of music. But what I don’t understand is the people who do that type of music, the public won’t support them.
We don’t do s**t but talk and support the people who treat us like s**t. You repay us by purchasing our music.

But we see that all the time. Look at the families of Malcolm X and Tupac. They should be financially rich beyond belief for all that they’ve done for us but they’re not and everyone continues to eat off their legacies.

AllHipHop.com: How did the mixtape (The Greatest Mixtape Ever Sold) with Whoo Kid come about?

Banner: Whoo Kid is a funny motherf**ker. We’ve been cool for a minute since I had went on tour with 50 about three years ago. I don’t know if you heard the mixtape, but he put his foot in that s**t. Like your grandma from Mississippi does when she’s making gumbo. I got Chris Brown on there. People are gonna be surprised at the partnerships I’ve had that I’m finally showcasing.

AllHipHop.com: As an artist closely tied to the people, how much does that weigh on you when you’re making music since your constantly keeping their struggles in mind?

Banner: Every artist that’s a real artist is crazier than a motherf**ker, all of them. Something ain’t right with me, Wayne, TIP, T-Pain, and 50. Andre 3000? Loony as a bat. But that’s the blessing. It’s Ying and Yang. God blesses us to think on a different frequency and to act on it. And it’s not just in music, it registers in all facets of your life.
I wish I could make records like Eminem and Andre 3000, but if you don’t have Jimmy Iovine or LA Reid behind your project that s**t is gonna fail unless you push that s**t on n****s.

People fronted (on the first single) “Get Like Me (Stuntin Is a Habit)” until people like Big Von (KMEL), Stan Branson (JMI), Leo and Ms. Kitty (XM Radio) got on it. People say they want something different but they don’t support nothing different until it becomes mainstream.

AllHipHop.com: Do you feel that the tension that existed between the East and Southern Hip-Hop fans has finally cooled off?

“A southern rapper has never really gotten true credit for being a lyricist unless a New York rapper said it. People started accepting Wayne when Jay-Z said he was dope. Same thing with T.I. It happened to me with Nas. Nah, don’t filter me through another n***a. Accept me for doing dope for me.”

Banner: A lot of times it take a New York n***a to say some s**t is hot before we say, “Oh it’s hot.” N****s heard me on that Nas record (“Middle Finger U”) and all of sudden it’s, “Oh David Banner’s rapping and political now.” N***a I been political! That verse I spit on “9MM,” if Biggie would’ve said it it’d be a Hip-Hop quotable. But it takes me to get on a record with somebody from New York before y’all will hear or listen to it.

AllHipHop.com: Now that the album is finished, have you been able to relax? Or does the fact that you say Hip-Hop fans don’t support different styles of music cause anxiety and resentment?

Banner: Man, I don’t give a f**k anymore. With (my last album) Certified, that s**t almost ran me crazy. I went through a really bad depression. I just knew that that album was the one. But that also showed that God was telling me, “I tell you what’s the one, not you.”

I did the best that I can and for the first time I’m proud of myself. If they accept it, great. But I know what the world is about. I know the world is a bunch of f**king hypocrites. Look at Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, and Andre 3000. White folks will jump on us and give us our praise first. I want my people to love me, but who have we shown that kinda love to before they died?

On Friday in Biloxi, MS, Webbie was supposed to perform, but never showed up. That’s what I heard, at least. There was a good size crowd there and they were amped up about seeing Webbie, according to my sources. I also heard, nobody was too TOO disappointed, because the other performers were so on point. All I have to say is,David Banner had every right to be angry. He was performing in Mississippi, so why wouldn't he be able to have more than seven minutes. Yet, if David Banner was the angry black man everyone professes him to be, he wouldnt have shown restraint and would have poured the water on the equipment. I think we need to give him credit for that and kudos for showing growth and maturity in the midst of hus pissivity.

I respect the fact that he stands for something when many people are bandwaggon jumper-oners, or dick-riders! But conversely, My advise to Banner is: Baby, we all see and feel your passion! We know that you are an intelligent black man! We do! I think that because you are so vocal and so strong, you have the tendency (in some eyes) to come off as angry and a lot of what you say gets lost in translation. What you say is relevant but its all about delivery! That comes with growth and you will get there. You will learn the art of not wearing your heart on your sleeve all of the time.

Banner posted another show on his kyte.tv channel yesterday of him rehearsing for his AOL show (trying to get details on that) and his Apple Store performances with LUPE FIASCO!!! How exciting!!! This is a busy man. If you've seen all of his kyte.tv shows, you know that he has been all over the place as of late. He has been in Atlanta, Mississippi, Denver, Texas, Los Angeles, Germany, Italy, New York, and Houston, all in a matter of a few weeks (and some of these places have seen duplicate visits from Banner). Gotta respect the hustle. One of my sources spotted Banner at an audition for a t.v. show spin-off a few days ago in Los Angeles. Thats a good look. I was thinking about how excited I am that Banner is building a legacy for himself. I'm soooooo looking forward to the album being released and to the movies he will be starring in hitting the big screen soon. He gives me something to look forward to. I was also thinking about how I haven't seen any advertisements or movie trailers yet. Is it too soon? What do you think? Anywho, just in case you missed one of my earlier entries, Mr. Banner will be performing at the following Apple Stores. Be sure to support him! I'm sure I will have a spy or two at the one of these shows....LOL

Here is a David Banner article I found about divine order and in David Banner's case, blessings in disguise. June 17, 2007 is when Banner's father passed away. Our prayers are with him! Keep him close to your heart and in your thoughts!

If you've watched Banner's kyte.tv channel, you know that Dottie (the name he gave his Bentley's name)is fully repaired.

“I was in downtown Atlanta on my way to the airport. I was in a beautiful ’06 silver Bentley GT with flakes in the paint, getting onto the highway right by Grady Hospital. Atlanta is on stilts when you’re going downtown. So I was on a bridge, sitting at the red light, and a lady smashed into my back at full speed and almost ran me off the bridge. She didn’t brake or anything, and she was on the phone. She thought I was gonna beat her ass because she saw a big, black dude. Everybody riding by was like, ‘Banner gonna beat that bitch’s ass!’ But I was hurt pretty bad. I hurt my neck and sprained my ankle. I didn’t even say nothing to her. I just got out and pointed to my Bentley symbol. The crazy thing with having an accident in a Bentley is her insurance won’t be able to cover it. So it’s a no-win.

I went to Mississippi to see my dad the next morning because I had missed my flight. I had been about to go to D.C. to host a party, then go to Miami, back to New York and then back to Atlanta. If that car accident hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have been able to spend time with my father before he died from lung and brain cancer. I spent three days with him. I bathed him, slept in the room where he was and laughed with him. He died two days after I left to go back on the road. The car was nothing compared to those three days I was able to spend with my father. I haven’t even checked on [the car] to be honest with you. I don’t really care.”

Is David Banner the co-star charmer?

Rumors are flying about the rapper's on set flings with his higher profile co-stars while acting in small roles on films. The Mississippi based rapper known more for his eloquent speech in front of Congress about rap lyrics than his music, has apparently used his way with words to conjure up off screen time with his beautiful leads.

While shooting Black Snake Moan in Memphis, an onset source claims to have seen him sneaking from co-star Christina Ricci's hotel room early one morning. Perhaps their on screen sex scene was just a reenactment of what occurred off screen? On the set of urban film "This Christmas", actress and it girl Lauren London is said to have been "extra perky" whenever Mr. Banner came around to chat. Couple that with rumors about former "Girlfriend" Jill Marie Jones on this Summer's "The Longshots" and it seems David Banner is not only racking up roles, but co-stars...in bed.

Tasteless says...
I can't take this guy seriously at all. He says one thing and does another.

Why doesn't he put his words to action? He talks about all of these problems but he adds to them by doing the exact thing that he criticizes.

Which one are you DAVID BANNER? Are you a Stunner or the humble person who wants so badly to fix all of these problems. You say that "rappers" have no respect and need etiquette classes, but you just dropped a song called "GET LIKE ME" where you tell us that "stunting is a habit".

He is both a stunter and a man who not only wants to remedy and aid his people but has done so on many occasions.

Really? Why don't you respect your listeners and their situations. They can't all stunt, but you're flaunting your wealth to them. What good does that do? You're degrading those that have less. Oh, wait, I can hear it already. You're telling them to strive to have butterfly doors and money to burn right? That way we can all floss, right?

This is very interesting, he has much respect for the people who appreciate his art and of course, knows that they all dont have what he has. He has given people money and the shoes off of his feet, Christmas gifts, etc. Banner always says that he came from nothing, he is the child of one of the poorest states in this country. He lets people know that that if he made it, anyone can with hard work. He is encouraging them to strive for the best and not to think small.

Wrong. It's not cool to be a materialistic person. People like you emphasize a lifestyle that is rare and can not be achieved or lived by most, so the misguided will go to any means to be like you. Some people that look up to you, will rob, steal, deal and kill to "GET LIKE YOU".

Again, with hard work anything is possible. He is very proud of what he has as he was homeless just a couple of years back. Banner is not to be blamed for the ills of society. Those that will "rob, steal, deal and kill" had it in them to do so anyway and their parents, environment are factors not David Banner.

You're ok with that? You're polluting the hood that you claim you want to save. I don't want to "GET LIKE YOU". I want cats like you to either change your ways or stop using my cultures, AFRICAN AMERICAN and HIP HOP to build your wealth while simultaneously destroying them both.

He doesnt pollute the hood, he "heals the hood" (Banner's foundation). Banner represents hope for many. He is the epitome of what hard work and talent can do/be. He is hip-hop and has afforded many people the opportunity to work, to go to college (through personal scholarships, to eat, to enjoy a Christmas they might not have had. He is one of the most vocal advocates of the hood!

You're no better than the whites who benefitted off of the backs of slaves. And no, I don't have a problem with all white people. I just have a problem with people in denial of the fact that they benefit from the misery and oppression of others. YOU, yes YOU David Banner are oppressing our people. Your people.

This was the most offensive of all of the paragraphs to me. Oppressing his people? Dude, are you serious? He's done more for his people, OUR people than many other rappers, politicians, athletes, etc. Do your homework!! He is multi-dimensional, He is a dichotomy not a contradiction. He is many things. As I've said before stop trying to put him in a box. I cant imagine Banner gloating in someone Else's misery. If that were the case, he would not have turned his tour bus around and respond faster than our government during Katrina. If you've watched Banner's kyte.tv channel, you know that Dottie (the name he gave his Bentley's name)is fully repaired.

“I was in downtown Atlanta on my way to the airport. I was in a beautiful ’06 silver Bentley GT with flakes in the paint, getting onto the highway right by Grady Hospital. Atlanta is on stilts when you’re going downtown. So I was on a bridge, sitting at the red light, and a lady smashed into my back at full speed and almost ran me off the bridge. She didn’t brake or anything, and she was on the phone. She thought I was gonna beat her ass because she saw a big, black dude. Everybody riding by was like, ‘Banner gonna beat that bitch’s ass!’ But I was hurt pretty bad. I hurt my neck and sprained my ankle. I didn’t even say nothing to her. I just got out and pointed to my Bentley symbol. The crazy thing with having an accident in a Bentley is her insurance won’t be able to cover it. So it’s a no-win.

I went to Mississippi to see my dad the next morning because I had missed my flight. I had been about to go to D.C. to host a party, then go to Miami, back to New York and then back to Atlanta. If that car accident hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have been able to spend time with my father before he died from lung and brain cancer. I spent three days with him. I bathed him, slept in the room where he was and laughed with him. He died two days after I left to go back on the road. The car was nothing compared to those three days I was able to spend with my father. I haven’t even checked on [the car] to be honest with you. I don’t really care.”

Remember I mentioned in an earlier post that David Banner talked about his cartoon, the Crooked 'Sipp? I found out the cartoon is being made into a movie.

Mississippi native, David Banner, debuted his Adult Swim cartoon, That Crook’d Sipp, Sunday (May 13) on the Cartoon Network. The show is set in Mississippi and focuses on the Beauregards, a white family from the 1800’s trying to integrate into today’s society. Banner plays the main character, Virgil, who is an entrepreneur and manager of a hip-hop group, the Sweat Tea Monsters. All of the show’s story lines are loosely based around Banner’s own experiences. “I have always loved Adult Swim cartoons, especially The Boondocks,” says Banner. “There are messages to be heard within the humorous storylines of series like these and this one will be no different. There are things that need to be talked about in our communities and when you’re dealing with a lot of young, black males, they’re angry. I felt that by addressing some of the issues whilst making them laugh, might get the point across more effectively.”

Here is an exerpt of an interview about his love for cartoons!

David Banner: Aw, man! First of all I’d like to say I’m a big cartoon fan. Like as gangsta as people think I am and know I am and seen me do the shit that I’ve done in the past I’ve always loved cartoons. I’m talking about from Voltron to Powerpuff Girls, all the way through. (laughs) You know what I’m saying how most people loud acting like they don’t be acting The Justice League knowing they love The Teen Titans. Nigga c’mon! I’m a cartoon fanatic homie! Straight up! So for me I just try to stay true to what I love. You know what I’m saying? And it’s easy for me. We performed, we done acting. Actually, doing a cartoon is ten times easier because all you do is get in the booth… it’s talking. You know what I’m saying? So you don’t have the pressure of the cameras, all that kind of stuff. You can be whoever the fuck you wanna be.

David Banner: I think when you’re doing cartoons you’re a little bit more free to be who you want to be because can’t nobody see you. Like, people are so into their image and what people are going to think if they see them play this part or that part. When you play cartoons and when you’re in a cartoon you just do whatever the fuck you want to. Act as silly as you want to, just be you. Whatever it is. You ain’t a gangsta all the time. You ain’t a killer all the time. The softest nigga ain’t soft all the time. You know what I’m saying? So, when you have the opportunity to really touch on all of the stuff that you’ve got inside of you, I think that helps you become a more well rounded person.

David Banner performed at Power 102's Power Jam in El Paso, TX yesterday (May 31, 2008). His unpredictability coupled with his spastic nature makes him one of my favorite artist to watch perform. At yesterday's show, the always animated Banner climbed trees, poured water on the crowd and did back flips! He also did a jump rope simulation. Two things are evident with Banner, his passion for performing and his audiences love and appreciation for that passion! He commands the stage. Period! I was tired watching just 12 minutes of the footage on his kyte.tv channel. Phew!

Unfortunately, the event was almost marred by a couple of fights that erupted in the audience. Fortunately, Banner was able to diffuse the situation by asking people to stop the violence. "Hey my dudes, stop fighting! Don't do that! They already don't want us to have nothing. Stop!" Banner said
"If you believe in God, put your hands up!" with the track for Cadillac on 22's starting. "Don't fight!" Banner went into the crowd and grabbbed a couple of the guys that were fighting and brought them on stage with him. "They already think all we are is a bunch of niggas, let's not ruin this. Let's have some peace!" Banner yelled.

The fights stopped and the show went on! Banner's influence was evident. Banner had the power to restore Power Jam!

Speaking of God, peace and influence, it's Sunday and I'm feeling spiritual and remembering all the goodness of the Lord! Yesterday's post entitled "Banner Basics" I wrote: I decided to include an article about David Banner that explains his humble beginnings. The article referenced Banner being low on cash and sleeping in his van (being homeless)early in his career. If you believe in God, His power and absoluteness, you know that nothing is coincidental or happenstance. I came across a scripture that reminded me of Banner and his struggle.

Deuteronomy 8:2
"And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether you wouldest keep his commandments, or no."

There was nothing coincidental about Banner (or any of us for that matter) going through struggles. God will put us through spiritual tests to ensure that we can handle and not take for granted the blessings he will bestow upon us.
God sees our hearts. Banner is a humble soldier for the Lord. Its not hard to tell with all that he does and continues to do for the community at large. He is the voice for the voiceless (for the Sean Bell's, for the Jena 6's, for the victims of Katrina, etc.)
I dont know him but ....Thank you David Banner! For standing up for what you believe to be true! For being courageous! For having heart and soul! For wearing your heart on your sleeve! For being so dope! For being an inspiration! For loving your people.

We all need to continue to support and celebrate men like him!! I plan to!

Decided to include an article about David Banner that explains his humble beginnings. I realize that there are many people who may think they know him or only know a little.

Termed "a thug intellectual in a world of crunk" by the Miami New Times, Mississippi rapper David Banner made a name for himself as an artist whose work is rife with contrasts and contradictions. He did not shy away from exploiting the raunchy and violent themes characteristic of hip-hop music's Southern branch, delivering tales of sensuality and mayhem in a quiet, rough voice that made them all the more intense. Yet he also wrote raps that described the environment in which poor African Americans lived in Southern cities, and in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 he became, along with Kanye West, a strong voice raised in protest against the United States government's response to the tragedy. To Billy Watkins of the Jackson Clarion-Ledger he described his music as "a Bible with a Playboy cover," and that schizophrenic quality, combined with Banner's mastery of the art of self-promotion, made him one of the most exciting emerging stars in hip-hop's so-called Dirty South style in the mid-2000s.

Jackson, Mississippi-born Lavell Crump took the name David Banner from the mild-mannered alter ego of the title character on the television show The Incredible Hulk. He also went by his family nickname of Billy when he was young. "He's a lot of people," Banner's mother Carolyn Crump told Watkins. "But he's true to each of them." Banner grew up in a supportive, religious, two-parent household and learned music on a ten-dollar electronic keyboard, then a drum machine, then a Casio keyboard sampler that he had at home.

His tastes from the start ran toward both hip-hop innovators such as Stetsasonic and street-credible gangster acts like NWA and the Geto Boys; later, as Southern rappers began to make their marks, he was influenced by the highly varied soundscapes of the Atlanta duo OutKast. Banner's rap debut came at Jackson's Raines Elementary School, and by the time he moved on to Provine High he had put together a distinctive sound of his own. While working as a grocery bagger at a local Kroger store, he made extra money by selling homemade CDs out of the trunk of his own car.

On instructions from his mother, Banner went to college at her alma mater, Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Even though his college career was not self-motivated, he did well, graduating with a business degree and enrolling in a master's program at the University of Maryland. Music began to take up more and more of his time, and finally, just one semester and a thesis shy of his master's degree, Banner left school. But his years of business classes would help in his burgeoning music career. "Look, I was the artsy type of dude who was trying to change the world with my music," Banner recalled at an industry meeting attended by Sonia Murray of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "But I'm a businessman…. When I left the University of Maryland, I was in the top five of my class. I know what it takes to win in this business."

His path to success started while he was still a student at Southern, where he and fellow rapper Kamikaze formed the duo Crooked Lettaz. Though Southern hip-hop acts were still comparatively rare when the duo started out, they forged a distinctive sound and got the attention of the durable rap label Tommy Boy. Banner's own profile rose when he produced tracks by Trick Daddy ("Thug Holiday") and Li'l Flip, earning a reputation as a multitalented young artist. And some of Banner's own music won airplay on Jackson radio station WJMI. "David's stuff stood out," WJMI operations manager told Watkins. "It was quality material. His beats were tight. He had an ear for the streets. So we put him on the air. He earned a pretty good following in this area." Banner released a solo CD under the name Them Firewater Boyz, and it sold briskly in Jackson clubs.

Slept with Pit Bulls
When the Crooked Lettaz album Grey Skies was released in 1999, it won praise from hip-hop magazines and from Jon Azpiri of the All Music Guide, who praised the live instruments of "A Girl Named Cim," the use of the koto, a Japanese instrument, on "Firewater," and the inventive recasting of the Run DMC rap classic "Rock Box" on "Get Crunk." The album was poorly promoted, however, and after this promising beginning Banner's career seemed to stall. Short on cash, he moved in with a friend in Atlanta, sleeping on the floor with the friend's four pit bull dogs. Things went from bad to worse when, back in Birmingham, Banner's decrepit van, containing most of his remaining possessions, was stolen by a group of teenagers.

The silver lining of this cloud was that the thieves threw the master copies of a CD Banner was working on out of the van, onto the parking lot of the radio station he was visiting at the time. Banner took this event as a divine sign and soldiered on. Performing wherever he had the chance, he caught the attention of Universal label executive Steve Rifkind and was signed to a five-album deal. Banner's major-label debut, Mississippi: The Album, appeared in 2003. John Bush of the All Music Guide called it "a very schizophrenic record, alternating a parade of one-note thug tracks ("F∗∗∗ 'Em," "What It Do") with more reflective material concerned with the realities of down South living ("Mississippi," "Cadillac on 22's")." On the last-named track, wrote Entertainment Weekly's Evan Serpick, Banner "Offers an affecting prayer over an acoustic melody worthy of Lynyrd Skynyrd."

Mississippi: The Album created a buzz. "Like a Pimp," featuring Li'l Flip, dented the charts; various top rappers and producers showed an interest in working with Banner; and the album was remixed by Southern rap producer Michael Watts into a spooky new version called Mississippi: The Screwed & Chopped Album. A quickly released follow-up album, MTA2: Baptized in Dirty Water, featured top-level guests Twista and Busta Rhymes, and garnered more positive reviews and publicity.

Drenched Listeners with Cognac
No one doubted Banner's talent, but the energy he put into the promotional side of his music also contributed to his growing success. He cast himself as an advocate of Mississippi music, often removing his shirt to reveal an enormous "Mississippi" tattooed in capitals across his back. At music industry showcases, Banner was a force of nature. Village Voice writer Tom Breihan described a 2005 event at which Banner "ran out into the crowd, jumped up on a table, tore his shirt off, and threw Courvoisier on the crowd," later wearing a Universal label banner as a cape and alternately threatening the assembled industry figures and exhorting them to promote Mississippi music. Banner paid for his own in-store appearances when he felt they were needed, and he bought five trucks to serve as rolling David Banner billboards, wrapping them in promotional materials.

Thanks in part to this kind of hustle, Banner's Certified marked his emergence as a top-level hip-hop star in 2005. The album maintained the basic duality of Banner's previous work, with tracks such as "I'll Take Your Bitch" balanced by raps in which, in the words of the All Music Guide's Andy Kellman, Banner seemed "more fired up and outspoken than ever, fearlessly and descriptively expressing the rage he feels for the way his people have been treated throughout history … Every other chorus seems to have been written for a mob of some kind." Certified rose to the number six spot on Billboard magazine's chart listing the 200 best-selling albums in the United States.

Banner's response to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina at the end of August 2005 mixed direct action with criticism of the actions of President George W. Bush's administration. Banner transformed his tour bus into a relief truck. "I got back to Mississippi before our government did, with food and supplies," he told Kelefa Sanneh of the New York Times. And he brought together a host of Southern rappers for a giant Heal the Hood benefit concert, held in Atlanta on September 17, 2005 with the aim of raising $1.5 million. According to Sanneh, he introduced "Like a Pimp" by saying that "Bush is giving his homeboys Halliburton the rebuilding contracts to our cities. Bush is the biggest pimp." Even before Katrina hit, Banner had begun using his wealth to benefit the community, personally funding five $10,000 college scholarships. Mixing a social conscience, powerful ambition, and a desire to break into new areas of the entertainment business—he was searching for a suitable movie role as of 2005—David Banner was definitely a major new star to watch.

I was perusing through YouTube getting my David Banner fix and found this recent interview he did with DJ Backside. Banner discussed his cartoon featuring Snoop Dogg, Mannie Fresh, T-Pain in addition to some surprises he refused to reveal. Another part of the interview (my favorite part) he is asked how he manages to stay out of the gossip spot light. Banner said he and one of his publicist had the same conversation a few days prior. Banner's use of discretion when dealing with his sex/romantic/private life only makes him that much more intriguing to me. I have often wondered who he has dated or been linked to. Surprisingly enough, even Superhead has made no mention of David Banner. There are stories (and not just in the south) about how well endowed he is, how he lays it down and puts it down. I would like to hear from any woman who has ever had a sexual encounter with him to tell what she knows to be true!!

I want to know:
What he likes to do?
What he likes to have done?
Is he generous?
Does he really like it funky?
Can he lick it like a peppermint swirl?
Is he freaky?
Does he last for 20 minutes or 2 hours?

Banner made mention in a recent article on allhiphop.com (Click on the blog title) about how much more stamina he has because of the 50 + pounds that he lost and insinuated that the ladies would agree. If he is as good as I've heard he is, those chicks may be afraid to speak for fear that they will be cut off from the supply! LOL

From what he said in the interview above, he likes variety and is currently dating a bunch of women including a whore or two(guess there may be hope for some of you street walkers out there!) LOL

I am going to make it my business!!! I am sure there are many women who are just as curious as I am about Mr. Banner's sexual ability. Maybe this will be a recurring post.

Happy holiday weekend! Under normal circumstances, I would be out and about hitting up BBQ after BBQ but because we are living in newer times, I have learned to become very selective with where I go and what I do these days. It seems I am not the only one in my inner circle that is cognizant of spending money because the options I would have to attend functions on this very holiday weekend have diminished, greatly! Gas prices are a bitch!! Mr. Banner has a show posted on his kyte.tv channel (www.kyte.tv/davidbanner or click on the title of this blog) that displays gas prices listed at a station in California being over $4 a gallon and this show was posted on April 16, 2008. Like David discusses on his show, our generation is concentrating our energy on the wrong things. Why aren't we more pissed off about the inflation and the recession? Why haven't we started a revolution? Why are families having to decide between buying food or filling up their gas tanks!? This is some real B.S.!!

I made the decision to kick it in the crib today and watch the idiot box. While channel surfing I stumbled across repeats of "Snoop Dogg's: Fatherhood" reality show. I turned to the episode of Snoop and Shante renewing their vows and got a glimpse of David Banner attending the wedding. Being home was not so bad after all. Aaaaaaand, "Black Snake Moan" has been and will be airing on Showtime this weekend. I get so turned on watching Banner's sex scene. I would not mind him handling me the way he does Christina Ricci's character "Ray" in this movie. Mmmmm.. LOLOL Maybe his episode of Monk will air again as well!
